Dr. Remi Alapo is an Adjunct Assistant Professor at the City University of New York [CUNY]. At CUNY, York College, she is an Adjunct Assistant Professor in Black Studies and Cultural Diversity. at the History, Philosophy and Anthropology Department.
She was on the department's Social Justice committee in the Spring of 2021. Since the Fall of 2023, Dr. Alapo has been on the Faculty Council as the History Department's adjunct rep.
At CUNY BMCC [Borough of Manhattan Community College], she is an Adjunct Assistant Professor in Business Management and in Africana Studies. Dr. Alapo was a part of the Spring 2023 faculty mentor in the BSAA [Black Studies Across the Americas] project, a BRESI [Black, Race, and Ethnicity Initiative] at CUNY Initiative. She is the faculty advisor of the International Youth Fellowship [IYF Club at BMCC], a "Safe Zone" Faculty Ally, co-chair [2020], and committee member [2022] for the Women's HerStory month. Prof. Alapo was a member of the BMCC Strategic Planning 2020 - 2025 [Committee: Strengthen BMCC’s Role in a Thriving NYC and as a Leading Community College Nationally], and was a committee member of the Race, Equity, and Inclusion [REI].
Besides being a Substitute Teacher in the New York City Public Schools, Dr. Alapo previously was an adjunct instructor at the Sociology Department at the Bronx Community College where she also was an alternate adjunct delegate on the faculty council/senate in addition to being on the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion faculty committee. Dr. Alapo has taught Business Ethics and Social Responsibility at Quisqueya Christian School [QCS]; and supported start-up businesses through a Service Learning program with the Haitian Partners for Christian Development, in Port–au–Prince and Jeremie, Haiti, from 2007 to 2009.
Research
Dr. Alapo received her Doctorate in Ministry [DMin] in Peace and Justice Concentration from the UTS Interfaith Seminary, New York [now HJ International Graduate School for Peace and Public Leadership] in May 2023. In February 2011, Dr. Alapo received her Ph.D. in Organizational Management and Leadership from the University of Phoenix, Arizona. In August 2000, she received an MA in African Studies and a B.A in French with minors in Political Science and Africana Studies from the State University of New York [SUNY], Albany in May 1993. Dr. Alapo's current research interests are in Post-Colonial Studies / Unlearning Historical Truths, Gender Equity, and Cross-Cultural Studies. She is a Visiting Scholar to Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife, Nigeria.
Life Outside of Academia
Dr. Remi is the Director of the Institute for Peace and Leadership, Inc. An organization with a focus on SDG 4 on education; 5 on gender equality; 16 on peacebuilding; justice, and strong institutions; and 17 on partnership building. Since October 2020, Dr. Remi Alapo has been the Special Adviser to the Secretary-General of the International Human Rights Commission [IHRC] on Education, Training, and Youth Development.
Affiliation
An Interfaith Minister, with a DMin in Peace and Justice Administration from UTS Interfaith Seminary, (HJI School Graduate of Public Service), Dr. Remi Alapo is an Ambassador for Peace with the Universal Peace Federation [UPF], and a Civil Society Representative at the United Nations representing the Women's Federation for World Peace International [WFWPI], African Views Organization, and Women's Consortium of Nigeria [WOCON]. Dr. Alapo is a board member of the New York African Studies Association [NYASA], and she is a member of the Women in Ministry section of the American Clergy Leadership Conference [ACLC].
